Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (which means “son of Timaeus”), was sitting by the roadside begging. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” So they called to the blind man, “Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you.” Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus. “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked him. The blind man said, “Rabbi, I want to see.” “Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road. Mark 10:46-52
First, notice in this story how Bartimaeus is calling out to Jesus. He is in need. His need is for healing to bring him the ability to see. He recognizes his need and he recognizes the power of God to do a miracle through Jesus. “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Then, Jesus has a brief conversation with Bartimaeus resulting in the restoration of his sight. But notice Jesus’ words, “your faith has healed you.” Bartimaeus demonstrated his faith in calling out to Jesus. He made his request known to the one who turned water into wine, cast out demons, and healed many others before meeting “blind Bart.” And if you read further in Mark, you will notice as Bart followed Jesus “along the road,” the next event is the triumphal entry into Jerusalem, and the beginning of Jesus’ final week of earthly ministry. It is possible, although not written in scripture, Bartimaeus may have become an eye witness to the crucifixion and the resurrection. His physical healing was only a prelude to his spiritual healing through the atonement of his sins on the cross of Calvary. And it all started with his willingness to cry out to Jesus and make his requests known to the one who could make a difference in his life.
Maybe you need to hear this today. What is it that needs healing in your life? What needs to be brought to the one who can take it away and bring restoration? Give it to Him, and keep your eyes open for what He will do next.
