“For I've grown a little leaner, Grown a little colder, Grown a little sadder, Grown a little older, And I need a little angel, Sitting on my shoulder, Need a little Christmas now.”
I believe these words sum up the last nine months. For many of us we have grown a little colder to our neighbor. The effects of social distancing. We have grown a bit sadder on our own. I believe we are in need of Christmas all the more this year. But what is it about the Christmas season that we need? What is about Christmas that gives us that pep in our step? The tree? The lights? The Hallmark Channel?
I think it is more than that. The Advent Season is something like no other. This season brings out the hope for a better day, the joy of our salvation, the peace of God and the love we share with one another. I, personally, feel the heart of Christmas most in the songs of this season. By far, my favorite carol is O Come All Ye Faithful. This carol is telling us to come in triumphant and joyful song because “unto us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6 NIV).
The birth of our Savior is cause enough for joy and shouting from the rooftops. Maybe Johnny Mathis was onto something in the rest of his song. “For we need a little music, Need a little laughter, Need a little singing, ringing through the rafter. And we need a little snappy, Happy ever after. Need a little Christmas now.”
Come... Let us adore Him this Christmas season. Whatever that may look like for you this year. Let the carols ring out through the rafters this Advent Season. Let the hope that Christmas brings give you an overflowing joy, peace and love.
We need a little Christmas this year.
