Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. Psalm 51:10-12
As we leave a week discussing holy attraction and enter into a week discussing unearned blessing, we find ourselves in the middle of the two. Maybe we have missed the mark lately. Maybe we can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. Or maybe we just feel like “this little light of mine” has gone out. Reading over this Psalm again gives a picture into the cry of David’s heart. At a time when David felt most away from the Lord, when his own decisions pulled him away, he received a wake up call….and responded. These are David’s requests...Create, Renew, Restore. Not more wealth or power, but that God would create a pure heart, renew a steadfast spirit and restore the joy of salvation to David.
David’s request was to be rejuvenated from the inside out. In other words, to be made whole again. I have become a fan of the band I Am They and they write these words:
Wherever you lead me, I know you won't leave me. Wherever you call me, you will make a way. Wherever we're going, I will be holding to the promise you have made. You will make a way.
What is the cry of your heart this week? Are you in need of purity of heart, steadfastness of spirit, or restoration of the joy of your salvation? If so, I know a guy…
Create… Renew… Restore… How will you respond?
